ISLAMABAD: The Thar Foundation Wednesday signed a memorandum of understanding with Charter for Compassion Pakistan (CfCP) to run three primary schools in Thar district.
The foundation is a not-for-profit organisation, serving as the social development arm of Sindh Engro Coal Mining Company (SECMC).
As per the MoU, the foundation will take overall responsibility of three primary schools in villages Bitra, Mansingh Bheel and Tharyo Haleepoto, while the CfCP will oversee the day-to-day operations of the schools.
According to details, the schools will have English as medium of instruction, and each building will feature nine rooms and other facilities as safe drinking water, washrooms, playgrounds, boundary wall and solar panels for power supply.
SECMC Chief Executive Officer Shamsuddin Shaikh and CfcP CEO Amin Hashwani signed the MoU during a ceremony held here in Islamabad.
Speaking on the occasion, Shaikh said “We are in Tharparkar not just to carry out economic activity around Thar coal but also socially uplift the area through interventions in health, education and other sectors”. CfCP CEO Amin Hashwani also addressed the ceremony, saying that increased economic activity in Thar was resulting in more power plants and more jobs. “We must take into serious consideration the social development of local communities.”
The Thar Foundation had earlier established three schools in Mithi, Islamkot and Thar Block-II with the collaboration of The Citizen Foundation. More than 3,000 children are enrolled in the schools.
