LAHORE: Rangers personnel involved in the June 2011 killing of a youth inside a public park in Karachi have received pardon by President Mamnoon Hussain. The men had been sentenced to life imprisonment.
The personnel received the presidential pardon in exercise of president’s powers under Article 45 of the Constitution, media reports said.
“After receiving the pardon orders from the President House, we have communicated with the IG prison, and the convicts may be freed any time from Karachi’s Central Jail,” said a senior official of the Home Department.
The Rangers personnel had killed Sarfarz Shah, 22, considering him a robber out to deprive people in the park of their belongings.
The video of the incident, aired by all channels at the time, had caused public outrage.
