MARDAN: A student of Abdul Wali Khan University was shot dead and another was left wounded on charges of sharing ‘blasphemous’ content on social media, witnesses and police said on Thursday.
Mardan Police Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Alam Shinwari said that the student, a media studies major, was accused of running Facebook pages which allegedly published blasphemous content.
The deceased was identified as Mashaal, who was enrolled at the university’s Mass Communication department. The dead body of the student was shifted to a hospital for medico-legal formalities.
The university was shut down for an indefinite period after the violence. The hostels have also been vacated.
He was assaulted by a group of students and appears to have succumbed to a gunshot wound, the DIG said.
