ISLAMABAD: Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) Chairman Azam Saigol resigned from his designation on Monday, citing personal reasons.
PIA spokesman Danyal Gilani confirmed the resignation of the PIA chief.
The Oxford educated Saigol is a well known industrialist of the country, and brought with him vast experience in handling big industrial concerns and corporations.
He had remained on PIA’s board of directors since 2013.
The move comes less than a week after PIA flight PK-661 crashed in Abbottabad district of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on way to Islamabad from Chitral, leaving all 47 passengers and crew members dead.
Shortly after the crash, there were calls from opposition leaders for the PIA chairman to take responsibility for the crash and quit his job.
Although Mr Saigol has cited personal reasons for the resignation, sources say he was under pressure to step down in the wake of Wednesday’s deadly plane crash.
