SRINAGAR: Hurriyat Conference Chairman Mirwaiz Umar Farooq said on Tuesday that the people of Kashmir have been facing untold hardships to achieve their right to self-determination.
The sufferings and oppression faced by the Kashmiris – in pursuit of their political goal – has forced the international community to take note as the world powers are now willing to help in finding a solution to the dispute, he said.
A statement quoting Mirwaiz said that after Turkey, Iran and other members of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), Britain has shown interest in playing a mediating role to resolve the Kashmir issue.
The statement of the White House revealed US President-elect Donald Trump’s willingness to play the role of a mediator in Kashmir issue was a welcoming development, he said.
Farooq said that to put an end to the sufferings, the Kashmir resolution was the world’s political and moral responsibility and added that Kashmir’s on-going peaceful resistance movement highlighted complete involvement and commitment of all the Kashmiris towards their cause.
The chairman stressed for resolving the Kashmir dispute, either in accordance with the United Nations’ Security Council resolutions or via dialogue involving Pakistan, the Kashmiri people and India.
Laced with nuclear weapons, the chairman said, India and Pakistan cannot afford confrontation as it will lead to devastating consequences for all in the region and to avoid such a situation, both the two countries have been repeatedly requested to find a solution amicably.
